Frequently Asked Questions

If your question is not answered below, please do not hesitate to contact us at store@nynaturals.com

How do you make kale snacks?
We prep farm fresh kale leaves, dress them with a delicious sauce, and dehydrate them for 12 hours until they are crispy and delicious.

Are your products gluten-free?
Yes, and our facility is gluten free.

Are your products vegan?
Yes, our products are vegan.

Are your products organic?
No, our products are not organic. Some of the ingredients, like the miso paste in the Spicy Miso Kale Chips, are organic. Some boxes are made from kale grown by local organic farms, particularly in season. We're working to increase the amount of local and local organic kale by contracting with more farmers each year.

Why aren't your products organic?
We think that except for a few ingredients (like miso paste, raisin, spirulina, and cacao) the cost for organic is not justified on health grounds. Organic kale is generally twice the price or more of regular kale. Our products are still pretty expensive compared to, say, cereal based snacks, and using only organic would make the price even higher.

When we get kale from local organic farms we get a better price than on the market so we can afford to use it. In the future more farmers will be growing for us so you'll see more of the organic kale in the chips. But we get great kale from non local farms too, and we believe the organic kale is not measurably better than the local organic kale. We use local kale as much as we can because we want to help local farmers and reduce our carbon footprint.

But kale is on the Dirty Dozen List!
We're a bit skeptical of the Dirty Dozen List, a list put out by a DC based advocacy group. It is not the product of a university or other scientific research organization. See this article in the Journal of Toxicology: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3135239/. The article specifically objects to the inclusion of kale on the list, as well as questioning the methodology used in assembling the list in general.

Are your products 100% raw?
The chips are dried at below 115 degrees, so that the temperature is never hot enough to destroy enzymes and other nutrients the way that higher heat does. However, there are a few ingredients that are not raw. The nutritional yeast is pasteurized to deactivate it, because otherwise it isn't edible. Our almonds (Greenola) are grown in the US, so they are required by law to be pasteurized (due to bacteria problems in the past with raw almonds). The sea salt may have been heated over 120 degrees by the sun. Basically, all ingredients are raw where there is a benefit to being raw.

Do your products contain soy?
Just one. One of the flavors is called "Spicy Miso." It does contain soy. The rest of the flavors do not contain soy.

Do your products contain any kinds of nuts?
Yes, our 5 flavors contain nuts. We use cashews for "Spicy Miso," "Bombay Ranch," "Vegan Cheese," and "Coconut Cacao." "Cranberry Nut Crunch," "Cherry Chia," and "Raisin Coconut" also contains almonds and walnuts.

"Sea Salt & Vinegar" and "Spirulina Crunch" are nut-free.

Do your products peanuts?
No but the facility our products is not peanut free. Other products are sometimes made in the facility that include peanuts.

Why is the calorie count so high in your products?
Most of our flavors have nuts like cashews or sunflower seeds. These are high calorie foods. And, dried kale is highly concentrated. One box has about 1/2 pound of fresh kale.

What does "raw" mean?
Raw means that it has not heated beyond 115 degrees Fahrenheit. That way more of the vitamins and other nutrients in the ingredients are preserved, and by-products created at higher temperatures are not produced.

What is the nutrition data for each flavor?
Go to our Products page. Select a product and look for the image of the nutrition panel.

What are the benefits of eating raw kale snacks?
Raw kale chips are a healthy alternative to typical starch based snacks like potato or corn chips. Some traditional chips have preservatives, loads of table salt, and other questionable ingredients.

You receive all these healthy benefits of raw kale snacks:

  • Greenola is more nutritious than granola with grains.
  • Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense leafy greens, rich in folate, calcium, and iron. It is very high in fiber, and with no starch. It is high in Vitamin K, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C. Also, it is a good source of minerals and beta-carotene.
  • Raw kale is higher in nutrients than cooked kale. The cooking process causes many of the vitamins, enzymes in the kale to degrade. If you want the most health benefits, eat raw or dehydrated kale. Our vegan kale chips are dehydrated under 115 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Our kale chips include other highly nutritious ingredients like nuts and nutritional yeast.

Can I order online?
Yes, you can purchase our healthy kale snacks through our "Products" page.

Why are my kale chips not crunchy?
Our kale chips are famous for their crunch. However, they need to stay sealed tightly, so they won't absorb air. They have to be stored in a dry place as well. If they are left in an open container, they would lose their crunch. If you ordered bulk bags of kale chips, kale chips need to be stored in a proper container in a dry place and sealed tightly.

Can you ship internationally?
For distributor inquiries, please contact us at store@nynaturals.com.

Are your shipping materials eco-friendly?
Yes, our shipping materials are eco-friendly. You can either reuse or recycle them! We use recycled paper for packaging. No plastic packing peanuts or other annoying materials.

What is the shelf life of your products?
The shelf life of our products is six months from the date of production.

How do I contact you?
Email us at store@nynaturals.com.

Why are my kale chips crumbs?
Our product is kale chips made from whole kale leaves before they are delivered / shipped. Depending on the size of the leaves, they may have to be broken to fit into the box. When they are shipped though, they sometimes get broken into smaller pieces since they are so fragile. They're still delicious when crumbled, especially on eggs and salads, but if you are not happy with the condition of the chips when you receive them, return for a full refund.

I found desiccant packs in my product. What are desiccant packs?
Desiccant packs are used to remove humidity that can ruin products which are sensitive to moisture. A desiccant pack is a little Tyvek bag filled with silica gel. They are completely non toxic and not dangerous to eat. However, they don't taste good, so please don't ingest them!

I'm interested in purchasing wholesale / bulk. How can I do that?
If you are a retailer or distributor, it is best to contact us at store@nynaturals.com directly.

What payment methods do you take?
Visa and Mastercard

I'm not satisfied with my purchase, what should I do?
We stand behind our product 100% and want everyone to be delighted with their purchase. Whether you have bought our chips online or in a store, just contact us for a complete refund or replacement. Email us a copy of your receipt and the details along with a photo of the back of the box (so we can see what day it was made) and a photo of the contents (so we can see if there was damage to the chips). If you bought them in a store, we will UPS you a replacement. If you bought from us online, we would refund or replace according to your choice. Most stores will refund directly.
